First, a shout to my fellow Americans out there. Hope you all had a great holiday!
Now to the real news: I don't know how long it's been there, but I just found out that Way of the Dodo is listed on the Comic Alert Website! As I understand it, once you sign up, you can log in and get links to all your favorite comic strips -- Web and syndicated -- delivered to your newsbox every time those comics update. (I'm not up with all this RSS stuff, so don't quote me on that!)
And the fee for all this is quite reasonable: It's free! Go check it out!

DON'T CALL THEM "RERUNS," CALL THEM "DODO CLASSICS!"
Sadly, I've had to come to the conclusion that I can't afford to keep pouring so much time and effort into the comic. All but one of the syndicates to which I've submitted it have sent me their polite form rejection letters by now. And frankly, readership has always been at very low levels (with all due respect and appreciation to those of you who have taken an interest).
For the time being, I'm going to have to take a page from the Ozy and Millie playbook and put the strip into reruns. These will be accompanied by a bit of commentary, explaining where I got the gag from, or behind-the-scenes making-of type of garbage, that sort of thing. (Plus. it gives me a chance to rip into The Company That Shall Not Be Named a little more!)
New comics will resume when I am able to give them the time and attention they deserve. That's "WHEN," not "IF." If I had any desire to let Way of the Dodo GO the way of the dodo, I'd be writing a goodbye posting instead of one announcing reruns.
Until then, enjoy these reruns Dodo Classics.

HEY, WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?
Someone recently emailed me asking to be put on my mailing list to be notified when the new strips begin.
To be honest, setting up a mailing list was a thought that never came anywhere near my mind until then. In the immortal words of Homer: "D'oh!"
(Hey! I have an idea! Why don't I set up a mailing list to notify people when the new strips begin?)
Seriously, if anyone else out there in Internet-land would like to be notified when I'm ready to get off my lazy duff and start drawing again resume the strip, feel free to drop me a line at either one of my listed email addresses.
I promise I'll use the list for that notification -- and nothing else. If you get Spam, it didn't come from me.

WHEN THE DODOS COME BACK TO CAPISTRANO . . .
No, wait, that's not right, is it . . .
No, wait, that's not right, is it . . .
It's official -- new Way of the Dodo comics will begin on
September 6. Mark your calendars and tell your friends!
I had hoped to stay on a 5- or 6-day-a-week update schedule. But at this point I doubt I'd
be able to keep up with that for long, so I'm going to have to go back to the old Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule. Maybe
I'll post more reruns on Saturdays or something.

RETURN OF THE DODO
(sorry, George! But since you're using silly sounding B-movie titles like Attack of the Clones now, it doesn't really matter, does it?)
(sorry, George! But since you're using silly sounding B-movie titles like Attack of the Clones now, it doesn't really matter, does it?)
As promised, Way of the Dodo begins anew today! (I keep my promises -- this is how we know I'd never make it in politics!)
I hope you found the reruns enjoyable, or at least informative. I needed to get away from the trap I'd fallen back into, of scrambling on Tuesday night to finish Wednesday's comic.
I found myself trying to just Keep The Thing Going out of sheer stubbornness, while losing sight of why I started drawing a Web comic in the first place.
Now, after some positive feedback and some time to plan things out, I'm ready to get it going again. In the coming months, you're going to see a few new characters to "brighten" Oswald's workday, along with the shedding of a little more light upon some other things that are going on.
A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY HERE,
or,
GO FORTH, MY MINIONS!
or,
GO FORTH, MY MINIONS!
A couple of weeks ago -- right about the time that I was going to start promoting the return -- I suddenly lost my Internet connection. So much fun.
It seems to be working OK now, but for a while there it looked like the comeback was going to be a short one due to my inability to upload new material to the site!
So I haven't been able to talk it up as much as I would have liked. If you've enjoyed Dodo, you can help support the strip by spreading the word that it's updating again.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY SERIOUS . . .
You remember those Bush National Guard memos? The ones that prompted the Republicans to change the subject and get us arguing about the capabilities of the IBM Selectric typewriter instead of Bush's service record? I learned over the weekend that CBS has posted the memos on its Website in PDF format:
May 4 |
May 19 |
August 1 |
August 18 |
Take a look at them and judge for yourself. Bear in mind: These links will take you to the memos themselves, not to any sort of commentary one way or the other. There's nothing spoon-fed here; look, think, and reach your own decision.
If you're interested, here's an article written by someone who happens to have some experience with the IBM Selectric.
